Second chance Sunday

In the words of Jim Bowen, ‘Here’s what we could have won’, or at least seen. We were all set for a day at the races yesterday, watching the DTM, Formula 3, Formula Palmer Audi, and ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup grids battle it out at Brands Hatch. It was the first time the 24 Polo drivers had visited the UK, and so I was particularly excited about seeing an exclusive technicoloured grid of the small Volkswagens.

I follow it for the club newsletter, but as it’s a primarily German championship (with sister series in Denmark, South Africa, and Turkey), the chances to see the races are slim. But, with it being part of the DTM support race package, the logistics had been arranged for the 24 pilots and their centrally-owned (by Volkswagen) steeds to cross the water, and take up a weekend residence at the Kent circuit.

But, for us at least, it wasn’t to be. My Polo hasn’t been started for over two weeks, and didn’t want to know come 10.30 on Sunday morning. Much deliberation about whether to charge the battery, jump start the Polo, buy a new battery charger, or take Nik’s car followed, but in the end, it wasn’t deemed worthwhile to make the trip, especially as the heavens had been predicted to open, almost guaranteeing us a soaking.

So, we borrowed a charger, connected the car up, and stayed at home instead. It was an equally worthwhile day, though. We got a lot of computer-based jobs done, cleaned out the chickens, evaluated the produce in the garden - tomatoes are ripening, but very slowly, and we’ve decided to leave the plot produce in the plot until it’s needed - and tested my bike inner tube for air leaks (there were none, so I don’t why it’s losing air).

We even had some time for social occasions with both sets of parents, and saw Steven, who popped around for a late afternoon chat on the way back to London.

Oscar undoubtedly had the most relaxing day, though. Curled up on the patio bistro chairs, he hardly moved for the day. He missed the weather changing from slightly damp to fine, and one of the chickens develop a sneeze, but he didn’t seem to care. He was too busy enjoying his catnap, no doubt dreaming about mice, tickles, and how to get one over those large cooped-up feathered birds that are demanding more of our attention, taking it way from him.
