Lily Allen: The Fear

This took me by surprise. I wasn’t taken by Ms Allen’s mockney cockney approach to music before, so didn’t take much interest in her 2006 début album Alright, Still. Too much like a female The Streets (or so I thought), the pop rap hip hop offering just didn’t appeal to me to all. So imagine my delight when The Fear breezed in a few weeks ago, courtesy of a free iTunes 12 Days of Christmas video download.

I didn’t think Lily Allen made music like this. All electro synths and a catchy tune, with nice multi-layered vocals and lyrics which tell stories about celebrity culture, I instantly developed more than a liking for it, and have waited for today, when the single is officially released. Rubbing shoulders in my iTunes library with Ladyhawke and Little Boots, so far 2009 seems to be about the female artists whose names begin with the letter L.
